A three-day training program is currently underway in Honiara on Gender Mainstreaming at the workplace for officials from the Ministries of Agriculture and Livestock, Fisheries and Marine Resources, Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs and the Public Service.
The training program is designed to build the capacities of government workers in the areas of gender equality, analysis and awareness especially in these respective Ministries.
Thirty selected participants attended the program with the aim to support deeper understanding of gender issues within Ministries and to examine opportunities different sectors to implement the findings of the Gender Assessment Report in Solomon Islands.
The workshop is conducted in partnership between the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the European Union Food and Nutrition Security Impact, Resilience, Sustainability and Transformation (FIRST) Programme, the Pacific Community (SPC), together with the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM) of the Ministry of Public Service and the Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs.
In Solomon Islands where food systems where Agriculture is a main part is predominantly, women involved. In rural areas, women are seen as caregivers, food providers, farmers, fishers and market vendors to support their families.
In doing so, women especially are faced with many obstacles, which make life extra difficult. Faced with this dilemma, policy makers at the global, regional and national levels are now ensuring gender equality has to be mainstreamed in policy development, programming, budgeting and so on.
The workshop concluded this Thursday.
