On 22 June 2022, Correctional Service Solomon Islands (CSSI) Commissioner Gabriel Manelusi paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr George Malefoasi and Principle Administrative Officer (PAO) Mrs Ileen Geli of the National Referral Hospital (NRH) in Honiara.
The visit involves a discussion mainly on signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between CSSI and NRH. This is regarding the engagement of inmates to utilize their skills and knowledge on ground works such as; landscaping, gardening and beautification inside the NRH compound.
This comes under the Correctional Services Act 2007 where inmates are rehabilitated to become assets in nation building. Yellow Ribbon Project is also aimed at giving inmates a second chance in life, stated under the CSSI Strategic Plan 2020 -2022.
Dr Malefoasi mentioned that, according to Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC) infection control in the Healthcare setting are cleanliness or hygiene.
He added, infection control is a huge area of care and maintenance. Inclusively, maintain adequate urine flow at all times, emptying of urine drainage bag in a sterile single patient use jug or container and bag kept below the pelvis but off the floor or a contaminated surface.
CEO Malefoasi thanked Commissioner Manelusi for the great initiative to involve low profile inmates to work at the NRH and also in various government ministries, as part of the rehabilitation, regeneration and reintegration process of inmates.
Meanwhile, CSSI Commissioner acknowledged and thanked the Chief Executive Officer and NRH Executive for their support to CSSI in this regard.
A huge appreciation was rendered to the Ministry of Health and Medical Services for their ongoing support towards inmates with unsound mind, as well as their guardian and support throughout the COVID-19 transmission.
This initiative will be implemented on the third or fourth quarter of this year for inmates to engage in community work programs.
